A medical abortion involves two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone the body needs to sustain the pregnancy, preventing the embryo from continuing to develop.
Misoprostol is taken afterward and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
This combination is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of pregnancy. It's important to know that the process typically involves vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping, which can be significant for some women. Being prepared and having proper medical support in place beforehand can make a real difference in your experience and your safety.

Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or hospital setting by dilating the cervix and manually ending and removing the pregnancy using a mixture of suction and scraping. Abortion providers often use a scraping or suction device called a curette, and sometimes they use forceps.

HAPC offers no-cost limited ultrasounds for patients with a positive pregnancy test who are considering an abortion as part of our pre-abortion consultations.
The morning after pill, sold over the counter as Plan B One-Step® and Next Choice, is intended to be taken as soon as possible within the first 72 hours after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. It may work on rare occasions to prevent the embryo from implanting in the uterus. But there are many factors to consider.

- How far along you are. Gestational age affects which options are available to you. If you're considering the abortion pill, it's important to know it's FDA-approved only through 10 weeks of gestation.
- Whether the pregnancy is viable. A viable pregnancy means it is developing and a heartbeat is present. If the pregnancy isn't viable, an abortion would not be necessary.
- Where the pregnancy is located. An ultrasound rules out an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs outside the uterus and can be life-threatening if left undetected.
